Tasting Notes:

Very even and creamy with plush, mouth filling juicy fruit, in particular cherry stone and redcurrant. Complex gunflint, textural, fine-grained tannins and well-integrated, subtle oak adds structure and persistence and closes out the power of this wine with restrained delicacy.

Technical:

A dry late winter with very wet conditions during October and November. The summer growing season was mild with a cool and relatively dry harvest period. These conditions resulted in below average yields but an excellent quality vintage for Drumborg in 2021.

Fruit was destemmed into small open fermenters with a proportion of whole bunches included. 6-8 days fermentation on skins was followed by partial barrel fermentation and 9 months maturation in 225L French oak - 23% new and 77% seasoned.

Fruit is exclusively sourced from the Seppelt Drumborg Vineyard in Henty, Victoria.

A masterclass in not judging pinot noir by the depth of its colour, here only a little deeper than its pinot meunier sibling. And there's more in the mouth, initially hesitant then majestically expanding on the finish and aftertaste, peacock's tail opening. The rainbow of berry aromas surging from the glass.

Some whole bunches, some barrel ferment, some new oak.

Balanced, elegant, refined and perfumed style. Silky in texture, glossy and spreads beautifully in the palate, red cherry, tart and sweet, some gentle clove and cedar spice elements, a bit of woody-twiggy chew to tannin but feels good in the flow and a bit of flinty-minerally character finishes the wine. Delightful.

From one of the most southerly vineyards in Victoria comes a pinot with “cool climate” written in big, bold letters all over it. You would love to get this wine in a Wine Options Game. Sinewy, fine and pure, it sings of its coastline location: of wild herbs, red cherry and undergrowth. Starts taut and then loosens right up, building, building as it goes. Cherry, cranberry, herbs, salt bush, a touch of smoky oak on the bouquet. A “proportion” of whole bunches was included in the winemaking, bringing a cut and thrust to the wine without being too over-powering. Some might think otherwise. A near-seamless palate awaits, mixing the softer aspects of the wine – stewed rhubarb and plum – held together with a sinewy tannin thread. The winemaker has matured the wine for 9 months in 23% new oak. It’s slurped it up, finishing with a light cigar-box-smokiness.
