Good depth of a deep redness. Bright. Alluring fruits - vibrant dark black cherry meshed with crushed fresh dark plum. All laced with warm spices - cinnamon & nutmeg. Beneath, scents of just-roasted lamb and rosemary. Aromatically, certainly a wine fighting above its weight! Let’s see if the palate delivers to this expectation …This vintage overtly leads with varietal shiraz … the cabernet weaving all together, covertly propping up its structural underpinning and grip.
Contented varietal notes enhanced by an earthy vegetable and tobacco leaf imprint. Medium-bodied - structurally defined, with supportive tannins (rounded, polished) and well-disguised oak.
Yes, signs off on the earlier aromatic promise.
First vintaged in 2006. The Koonunga Hill Seventy-Six Shiraz Cabernet, with its retro packaging, was released as an homage wine to the famous 1976 Koonunga Hill ‘Claret’, a wine that captured the imagination of Penfolds wine enthusiasts.
A multi-regional South Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet, a wine style that has played a pivotal role in Australia's rich winemaking history. Plentiful winter rainfall offered the grapevines across South Australia healthy soil moisture profiles in the lead up to the growing season. Spring was quite cool, conditions that initially slowed down vine growth. Temperatures gradually warmed in October with vines producing large canopies, little by way of irrigation was required. Growers had to work hard to control vigour and crop size. Vintage was delayed by up to a month in some regions. Weather conditions during harvest were generally dry favouring fully ripened grapes with well-developed colours and flavours.
