Juicy, dense and more-ish - a sophisticated varietal and regional matrix unfolds, stamped with Barossa integrity. But, what from what? Best guess: ironstone – from shiraz and a continuum of fresh red and dark berried fruits from its grenache and mataro stablemates. Super-fine tannins permeate across the palate, no doubt contributed by all three varieties. Background oak ever so distant. Lingers.
Bin 138 draws its inspiration from the wines of Southern Rhône, where shiraz, grenache and mataro (mourvèdre) are blended in varying proportions to create full-bodied wines possessing rich and heady perfume. Each year fruit for Bin 138 is sourced from old Barossa Valley vines (some more than 100 years old) and then matured for 12 to 15 months in seasoned oak hogsheads to allow the different varietals to shine through. The first vintage release of this varietal blend was the 1992, labelled ‘Old Vine Barossa Valley’ – it was then elevated to Bin status with the 1998 vintage.
Autumn rainfall was below average, a trend that continued into early winter with only 25% of the long-term average achieved in June. The latter half of winter was wetter, with vines entering the growing season with very healthy moisture profiles. Temperatures were below average during winter, however it warmed substantially through spring boosting vine growth and rushing the vines through flowering. Spring conditions were dry early, followed by plentiful November rainfall which encouraged good, strong canopy development. Summer was dry, with no recorded major rain events. This carried into January with a heat spike around veraison causing vines to stall, pushing the start of vintage out by a week or so. The warm weather carried into autumn, setting up an Indian summer with favourable conditions for ripening grapes, and this coupled with dry conditions set up a high-quality vintage for all three varietals.
“This Refreshingly Abundant Expression Of Barossa SGM (GSM Or GMS) Never Relies On Oak Or Alcohol To Achieve Its Character.” –Shavaughn Wells, Penfolds Winemaker

"I wonder how many people would answer this question correctly without looking it up: which wine has the higher RRP, Bin 138 or Bin 28? This 2018 version is 68% shiraz, 22% grenache and 10% mataro. It’s matured in both French and American oak but none of it is new.
It tastes of black and red licorice, raspberry, toast, earth, the sweet side of tar, fragrant herbs. It’s exceptionally eager to please, all velvety and plush, but a raft of dry-but-well-integrated tannin is an effective harness. The flavour profile here has a clear sweetness to it, which will suit some drinkers more than others. Which of course is true of all wines. Once again we have to note the balance here; it’s jammed with sweet fruit flavour and yet it remains neater than a phone book, or a new Filofax, or a root directory, or whatever. This wine is a pleasure to drink."

"Very deep, dense purple/red colour with a rich, super-ripe, decadently-perfumed bouquet with concentration, richness and fleshy texture. A trace of blackberry jam. Full-bodied, with supple but abundant tannins, and a long carry. The concentration is a cut above. An excellent example of an SGM and very much in house style."

"A 68/22/10% blend, each component matured for 12-15 months in used American oak. Obviously enough, the accent is firmly on the fruit, which is nothing if not honest. Makes life easy in deciding when to drink it - ready now, but will run for 15+ years thanks to its screw cap."
