Tasting Notes:

Dark crimson red with purple hues. A very complex nose exhibiting sub regional notes of chocolate and spices on the savoury spectrum, with bursts of plum, dark berry and bright whole bunch fermentation characters. Simultaneously delicate yet dense The bright berry characters derived from whole bunch fermentation balance beautifully with the darker more brooding iodine and peat notes from traditional long duration skin contact There is great poise on the palate, starting with dark fruit before moving through to more savoury notes, then finishing with well resolved tannins and nuances of new French and American oak

Technical:

Centenary Hill Barossa Shiraz is a wine that stands out as an icon, a testament to Orlando’s legacy in South Australia, and the love of the Barossa. Sourced entirely from old vine blocks in the Southern Barossa, which are known to impart regional savoury flavours of dark chocolate and spice as well as dark berry and cherry fruits. The vine age produces small, low yielding crops with intensely flavoured berries, which lend dense red colour and ripe sweet tannins to the wine. Above average rain in the winter preceding the 2015 vintage, set up the soil moisture for a great start to the growing season. Combined with a warmer than average spring, the vines got away to an excellent start, although some late spring frosts did affect yields. A cool January allowed the vines to develop flavours in sync with berry ripening, and some rain at this time supplemented the vines. A dry February, with cool nights enabled the grapes to ripen evenly with no disease pressure, resulting in an outstanding vintage in the Barossa. Four separate parcels went into making the 2015 Orlando Centenary Hill Shiraz. A combination of small open fermenters and some enclosed static fermenters were used to impart different characteristics to the component wines. Two parcels underwent traditional destem and crush procedures prior to ferment, while the other two retained a portion of whole bunches. Time on skins varied from 11 days for the whole bunch components to 14 days for those fully destemmed. This enabled the capture of the bright “bunchy” flavours without too much extraction of tannin from the stems. The longer extraction of 14 days for the destemmed components, delivered more brooding dark fruits, sweeter rounder tannins and structure to the wine. The parcels were matured in a variety of oak for 18 months – predominantly new and old French oak hogsheads, along with a small selection of new American oak hogsheads.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Angus Hughson Wine Pilot
"Centenary Hill has had a makeover – Jacobs Creek is gone and Orlando is back and it has delivered a classic expression of Barossa Shiraz, as you’d expect. This is a crowd-pleasing Barossan from start to finish which is hearty, flavoursome and hard to put down. The wine is deeply coloured and flavoured with ripe mocha, mulberry and baked earth fruit aromas well supported by new toasty oak. It is then ripe and chewy with firm tannins, matched with layers of ripe, licorice scented fruit. The overriding impression is balance – all the pieces sit well together in a bold style. Yes it will age well, very well, and is a bit of a sleeper, but is also a great drink right now."

95 Point Rated - Bob Campbell The Real Review
"Intense, elegant shiraz with masses of dark berry, vanilla, wood-smoke, chocolate-mocha, five-spice and French oak flavours. Moderately astringent but nicely balanced with fruit and alcohol sweetness. A seriously good shiraz with great cellaring potential."

94 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Deep, youthful red/purple colour, with a bright, bold aroma of melted dark chocolate, spices and peppery traces, deep savoury flavour and a lingering finish. Liberal oak and a subtle overtone of humus. It's certainly full-bodied, solid and dense. The tannins are lavish yet supple and ripe. A big, generous wine, with excellent cellaring potential."

94 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front
"Centenary Hill comes back to the Orlando banner, as opposed to the Jacob’s Creek banner. The new Orlando label/logo doesn’t scream premium, to my eyes, but the market will decide. Interestingly, this saw both 50% whole bunches and a portion of new American oak, and that’s not a winemaking combination you see everyday. Dense black berried fruit flavour, toast, coconut, dark earth and malt. It’s a substantial red wine, ‘traditional’, ripped with dry, integrated tannin, wrapped in black licorice, licked perhaps with pepper. It’s bold and warm but the texture, tannin and fruit intensity here are all elite."

93 Point Rated - Mike Bennie The Wine Front
"Slippery, intense, slick and long. Peppery spice, rich, dark berry fruitiness, cocoa powder and anise. A generous wine that feels well kept, delivering some softening with age, but still finding vitality and poise – feels righteous in its style. Wonderful texture, actually, a glide here. Heft and grace."

93 Point Rated - Ralph Kyte-Powell The Real Review
"It’s a big, brawny red made with lashings of oak input imparting an overlay of coconut, caramel and toffee to a core of ripe berry fruit. All that charry wood makes its presence felt on the palate too, which is full-bodied, ripe-flavoured and lingering. Layered tannins are in excellent balance and it finishes warm and long. Already five years old, this is a shiraz that ideally needs another five years to mellow and integrate further."

91 Point Rated - Nick Stock James Suckling
"This is in new livery, but remains a traditional-styled shiraz with plenty of cedary and spicy oak, some light leathery nuances and bold ripe blackberries. The palate has rich and smooth tannins that are bathed in sweet, ripe blackberry flavors and laced with vanilla spice. Tirage has brought this all together nicely. Old-school style here. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
