Attractive notes of violets, dark berries and plum supported by hints of liquorice and a floral lift. Bright layers of focused red and blue fruits with hints of dark chocolate and peppery spice, finishing long with fine sheets of silky tannins.

Technical:

With better winter rains, and a perfectly timed 30mm event at the start of February, we were rewarded with better crops and berry size after a few drought-affected lean years. Conditions through late February, March and April could only be described as perfect with mild to warm days with no heat spikes, combined with cool nights. This meant for a long even ripening period and a lovely pace to the vintage. 2021 will be remembered as an exceptional Barossa vintage. The parcels of fruit were fermented separately in small stainless steel fermenters some with submerged caps, and twice daily pump overs. Post ferment, the component wines were matured in oak for 15 months, with 25% in new fine grain French oak hogsheads (300L) and the balance in older French hogsheads and puncheons. We intend for the wine to be approachable in its youth, but with ample structure and fruit depth to allow cellaring, under good conditions, for at least 15 years. Sourced from old Shiraz vineyards in the Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Ebenezer, Moppa, and Eden Valley regions comprising 75% Barossa Valley, 25% Eden Valley fruit.

Accolades & Awards:

96 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
Intense purple-red colour and a spicy/meaty and dried-herb bouquet, very fragrant for such a big, powerful shiraz, with dried thyme, oregano and mace notes. The palate is powerful, concentrated and the intensity driving and long. There is delicious fruit sweetness and a warming heart to this lovely wine. Great to drink now and for at least 20 years more.

95 Point Rated - Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion
Shiraz sourced from old vineyards in the Barossa (Krondorf, Tanunda, Marananga, Ebenezer and Moppa) and the Eden Valley. Vibrant and pure at heart with deep black plum, black cherry and boysenberry fruits, plentiful exotic spice, violets, licorice and wafts of light cedar and vanillin oak. Impressive fruit depth, sandy tannin support and long, plush finish of spicy black fruits and earth.

95 Point Rated Andrew Caillard MW - The Vintage Journal
“Deep crimson. Dark cherry, elderberry, roasted chestnut aromas. Richly concentrated black cherry, elderberry fruits, fine graphite, sinewy tannins and roasted chestnut/walnut notes. Finishes mineral and long. Still quite elemental but well-balanced with beautiful fruit definition.”

94 Point Rated - Mike Bennie Wine Business Monthly Magazine
“The latest suite of releases from John Duval have been excellent, and no slouch here. A supple, flowing affair but with fine, cinching tannins lending a hand, cool acidity as an undertow, spice and herbs in spades with good concentration of fruit flavours but a freshness too. This wine seems to lift and lift. Elegant, refined and really great.”
