Tasting Notes:

Deep crimson with vibrant ruby hues. Lifted aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, Satsuma plum, blueberry, anise and violets with hints of black pepper and cedar. Rich and concentrated flavours of dark plum, blackberry and blackcurrant, with a pure, plush and focused mid-palate, bright, balanced acidity, and excellent length, carried by fine-grained, ripe tannins. One of the all-time great vintages of this wine.

Technical:

A moderately wet winter combined with average spring conditions meant that vines grew well in the mild weather. Ideal flowering conditions in late spring/early summer lead to the potential for near-average yields. Late December became warm and dry and assured for healthy canopies with low disease pressure. The summer months of January and February were typically hot and dry but extreme heat periods were shorter than in recent memory, characterised instead by well above-average overnight temperatures. March and April provided the light and warmth which lead to full and balanced maturity being achieved across all grape varieties. All in all, the 2018 vintage will be considered a standout of this decade, fittingly so in the year we celebrated our 150th anniversary of family winemaking.

Matured in 20% new and 80% seasoned (71% French, 29% American) oak hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and bottling.

65% Shiraz | 23% Cabernet Sauvignon | 9% Cabernet Franc | 3% Merlot

Accolades & Awards:

97 Point Rated - Andrew Caillard The Vintage Journal

"Deep colour. A classic Henschke style with developed blackberry, cassis, dark chocolate, roasted walnut aromas. Richly flavoured, complex and bittersweet with attractive ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, roasted walnut, hint chestnut notes, sage and tobacco, lovely mid-palate density and fine supple chocolaty tannins. Finishes claret firm with a fine graphite plume. 65% shiraz, 23% cabernet sauvignon, 9% cabernet franc, 3% merlot. 18 months maturation in 20% new and 80% seasoned hogsheads (71% French 29% American oak). A superb vintage in this series."

95 Point Rated - David Brookes Halliday Wine Companion

"65/23/9/3% shiraz/cabernet sauvignon/cabernet franc/merlot grown in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Matured in 71/29% French(20% new) and American oak hogsheads for 18 months. Detail is a wonderful thing. If you stick your nose in the glass and close your eyes, perhaps tilt your head just so, you can pick out the individual components of this wine, yet they mesh together perfectly. Juicy berry and plum fruits, abundant spice, fine-grind tannin grip, a fine lacy acid line and an elegant, perfectly poised, slow fade out of pure fruit."

95 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot.Com

"It was a super vintage in both the Barossa and Eden Valley. This is a blend of shiraz dominant with contributions from cabernet, cabernet franc and merlot. Nose displays those rich dark fruit characters that point to a fully ripe mix of fruit. The palate has a grainy. slightly chalky texture which allows the generous fruit flavours to build and hold their lines to the long finish. Dry, slightly savoury earthy finish with a trace of vineyard ironstone.'

95 Point Rated – Ken Gargett Wine Pilot.Com

"Black/purple in colour, the nose exudes concentrated notes of cassis and blackberries. There are warm earth tones, mocha, coffee grinds and licorice. A hint of fresh blueberries. Good focus, there are considerable tannins here, but they are soft and supple and help carry the wine to its lingering and persistent finish."

94 Point Rated - Stuart Knox The Real Review

"Deep ruby red in the glass. Fragrant and lifted with dark berry, violets and earth spices showing. Medium in weight yet carrying an underlying power that demands your attention. There’s a seamless nature to the wine that suggests a great blending hand in the background, not one note out of place. Great flow and it caresses the palate incredibly long and lingering."

94 Point Rated - Stuart Knox The Real Review

“Cedar, dried berries and plums, hard brown spices and mint all intertwined here, with ripe red-plum, blueberry and gingerbread notes. The palate holds a ripe and dense core of quite dark fruit aromas with a smoothly concentrated finish. A blend of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot. Drink or hold.”

90 Point Rated - Mike Bennie The Wine Front

"B-rossa and shiraz, cab, cab franc, merlot. I blew into a euphonium last week, by chance. Choc-berry, some ripe plummy characters, raspberry liquorice and some leafy, herbal notes. Very soft, supple, cruises along with this juiciness and good times lift. Lush in a way, a little dry and then yet that texture does lift the wine some. Fairly simple, but pleasing in its way."
