Juicy and red fruited, with a plush and supple palate. There is a hint of spice and fresh herbs from the whole bunch component and the mouthwatering natural acidity and fine tannins result in a textural and long lasting finish.
The 2021 Piccadilly Valley Pinot Noir is a blend of fruit from a handful of grower vineyards around the Ashton Hills estate. Stephen George has taken great interest in applying his winemaking approach to parcels from elsewhere within the Piccadilly Valley and seeing how the wines compare with those from the Ashton Hills vineyard. The resulting blend benefits from varied fruit character and vineyard expression, while maintaining the fine tannin structure that is typical of the Ashton Hills style.
Flowering in Piccadilly Valley is relatively late owing to the cool climate, and we were lucky to flower during a warm window, however, combined with a dry season, yields were still compromised, as they were across the state. Although in short supply, quality was excellent and the clean fruit ripened in mild conditions showing good colour, flavour and concentration.
Grapes were handpicked, keeping individual clones separate in small open fermenters. Some whole bunch fruit (40%) was added to ferments, enhancing aromatics and structural complexity. Fermentation was initiated by indigenous yeast (wild ferment). Each clonal parcel was basket pressed and filled to seasoned French oak barriques with full solids. All barrels were kept on lees to build palate, body and complexity. They were racked and blended just prior to bottling.
94 Point Rated - Jeni Port James Halliday Wine Companion
"Fermented with 30% whole bunches, matured in French oak for 9 months. In the dark and brooding class of pinot, with undergrowth, autumnal leaves, dark berries, woodsy spices and sage. The amount of whole bunches has been decreased from 2020, a good sign, bringing an element of added complexity rather than sharpness. A strong, firm, exciting young pinot."

“Fruit for the 2021 Piccadilly Valley Pinot Noir was taken from six blocks and split into 45 separate ferments. The percentage of whole bunch was backed off a little to 30% so as not to overpower the fruit characters, but still play an important role in aromatics and structure. This is in lovely form. It tastes spicy and it feels well structured but the fruit is ripe and juicy. Cranberry into boysenberry and red cherry, florals and woodsy spice. It’s fairly light on its feet but it has enough insistence to make its quality clear. Oak, gently smoked, is so very well played here, so neatly tucked. It’s well played all around."
90 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Light ruby colour with tints of purple and brick, the aromas spicy and gently stemmy suggesting some whole-bunch activity in the mix. Good flavour while not more than light-bodied, is intense and lasting. There are some firm tannins adding structure and the wine is beautifully balanced and polished. It's already showing some attractive complexity. A fine wine of a lighter style."
