The Clare Valley Watervale Riesling is quintessentially Watervale, with aromas of bath salts and Bickford’s lime. It has intense flavours of lemon zest and the natural acidity gives the wine a freshness and liveliness that is packed full of flavour. The wine shows purity of the variety and region in which this grape excels.
The Watervale Riesling vines, were planted in the early 1970’s and is situated in the heart of the township of Watervale, in the Clare Valley. The soils are classic red loam over soft rock.
The 2019 Clare Valley vintage presented quite a tough vintage. The lack of rainfall in the spring and summer brought an early and condensed vintage with seriously reduced yields. The flavours were intensified and concentrated so the lack of yields were more than compensated in with flavour and quality. The Riesling was harvested in the early hours of the morning in early February 2019. The fruit was crushed, de-stemmed and pressed into stainless steel, and the juice allowed to settle. After 5 days of cold settling, the juice was racked with very little solids, and fermented slowly at at temperature of 14C for 10 days. The wine was then stabilised, filtered and bottled in November 2019.
96 Point Rated - James Halliday Wine Companion
"The yields were very low across the Clare Valley in '19, but the quality was very high. This wine achieves the difficulty of dealing with flavours going OTT without losing the brightness and freshness the palate displays. It's lemon/lime/green apple sorbet all in one mouthful. Acidity of 7.5g/l and a pH of 2.88 are the indicia of a high quality riesling wherever it may be grown."
