Really pretty raspberry fragrance, with nori notes, some charred nori, spicy charcuterie and a hit of Hickory sauce.A light to medium bodied Cabernet. It has a lovely fresh acid line, fine, crisp and sinewy tannins and a soft, elegant core. Unveils flavours of raspberry and berry compote with lovely mushroom and dusty earth, vanilla custard and nutmeg.
The individual batches were destemmed and sent as whole berries to stainless steel rotating fermenters. 100% wild yeast was allowed to ferment all our red batches. After a few days in a gentle soak, fermentation kicks off, with batches pressed once fermentation is complete. Open top and use of aeration during fermentation helps to promote a clean fruit perfume, soften the tannins and bring so much life to the wine. The resulting wines were matured in fine French oak for 11 months prior to blending, with limited racking to help preserve the delicate wild characters captured in this low intervention approach.
93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5.5% Malbec, 1.5% Petit Verdot
93 Point Rated - Ray Jordan Wine Pilot
"This is such a good Cabernet, especially when you consider the price of $30. It seems the Filius grows in sophistication and varietal expression each year. This was a cool year of course, but the fully ripe fruit delivers, and then some. Has a little bit of Malbec which is an important consideration for the wine, adding just that little fruit brightness and mid-palate plumpness without compromising the controlled linear structure. A little graphite and oyster shell minerality completes a terrific value wine."
91 Point Rated - Ned Goodwin MW James Suckling
"Plenty on offer for the price, although paradoxically not the best vintage for a value offering. The tannins, a bit bony and ungenerous. Conversely, I like the savory elements here and feel that things will gel and fill out with time. A slick of blackcurrant, green bean, sage and mint, before the shins and elbows of youth nudge the inner gums. Despite the accessible pricing, give this time. Drink or hold."
Huon Hooke The Real Review
"Medium-deep colour with a subtle purple tinge; there are cedary oaky and linseed oil aromas firstly, the palate drying and a tad monochromatic, although there is enough depth to suggest age will bring out more. It tapers to the end where it finishes with real cabernet firmness."
