A perennial favourite, Grenache from old vines shows it ability to exhibit lifted florals, red juicy fruit characters such as wild cherry, raspberry and pomegranate. The palate has delicious texture and long acidity balancing a freshness from savoury Mataro and bolder Shiraz components.
Cuvée Juveniles was created as a ‘Cote Du Rhone’ inspired bistro wine from the classic Barossa varieties of Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre) and Shiraz from mostly old, unirrigated vineyards. These varieties are the cornerstone of the Barossa Valley and are intrinsic in the wines that are so easily appreciated around the world and often referred to as GSM blends by sommeliers and consumers alike.
The growing season was defined by a continuously warm to hot summer with no effective rainfall, wind and hail at flowering, and followed with three major frosts - resulting in an earlier and much smaller harvest than average. These tough conditions produced smaller clusters of intensely dark berries with thick fleshy skins contrasted against brown mature stalks. Whilst yields were down, once these vineyards were fermenting in our cellar the concentration of colour, tannin and aroma of the 2019 vintage was revealed.

"Crafted from old vines but designed to be drunk relatively young, this wine proves that quality Barossa fruit doesn’t need fancy winemaking. Grenache stars in this blend with mataro supporting and just a cameo appearance (5%) from shiraz. It’s overflowing with juicy black cherries, sundried blackberries, a lovely savoury roasted lamb meatiness (those charry edge bits!) and a pantry-full of herbs and spices – star anise, dried rosemary and thyme, freshly grated nutmeg, a hint of Sichuan pepper. The remarkable thing is that this all comes from the fruit, not a lick of oak! At 15% alcohol it’s not a shy wine but I had to go back and double-check that number because there’s no heat. Powdery tannins and supple acidity round out the picture. "

"67/23/10% grenache/mataro/shiraz, sourced from 40–150yo vines, mostly dry grown, across 6 districts in western and northern Barossa. No oak. Ticking every box for the classic Aussie barbecue quaffer, this is a bright, sprightly and downright delicious GSM. Balancing juicy, spicy fruit flesh, tangy acid poise, supple tannin presence and herbal complexity, from mostly dry-grown vineyards in this hot, dry season, without relying on a skerrick of oak. Kudos. Alcohol brings warmth without heat or dryness to a well-resolved conclusion."

"A tank-aged blend of 72% Grenache, 23% Mourvèdre and 5% Shiraz, the 2019 Cuvee Juveniles features notes of red raspberries and cherries lightly dusted with hints of cinnamon, clove and allspice. Medium to full-bodied, it's a smooth and supple, easy-to-drink—almost chuggable—wine for near-term enjoyment.
