A medium-bodied red, it demonstrates the beauty in balance over power. Fresh red berries including raspberry and blueberry are flavoured with notes of clove and black pepper. The palate is long and layered with elegantly fine grained tannins
The growing season in 2021 had two key features. Cool and windy weather at flowering gave us super-low yields, and a lovely and cool February meant great flavour and acidity.
It was a game won or lost at the selection table. After hand sorting, we destemmed about 60%, and left 40% as whole bunches. Gentle, slow ferments gave us fine tannins, before the wines were tucked into a mix of small and larger barrels for 14 months.Unapologetically cool climate Shiraz! A succulent wine with beautiful perfume, bright raspberry and boysenberry notes, and elegant tannins. Where 2020 was more opulent, this 2021 is sleek and tailored.
Founded in 1989 by cousins, winemaker Martin Shaw and Master of Wine Michael Hill Smith, Shaw + Smith make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills. It’s high, it’s cool, and Shiraz thrives in it. The Adelaide Hills has a reputation for high quality, but also has lots of diversity that makes it one of Australia’s most exciting cool climate regions.
96 Point Rated - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front
This is a beautiful release of Shaw + Smith Shiraz. It’s even-handed and well tempered but then it’s all joy from there. A forest of berries, a walk through flowers, peppers flung through and rubs of woodsy spice; the combination of fruitiness, savouriness, seriousness and fun is a highway to pleasure, built on wine. For all that the tannin is another dimension in itself; fine, lacy, assertive and savoury at once, complete with its own twiggy spice notes. It’s drinking beautifully and it will continue to do so.
95 Point Rated - Huon Hooke The Real Review
Very deep and bright red-purple with impressive saturation, while the bouquet is fresh and brightly youthful dark fruits and spices, black cherry through to dark plum, with a hint of earthy ironstone and graphite—almost a pepperiness. The tannins are ample and supple, adding texture and gravitas as well as a trace of agreeable bitterness which either food or bottle-age will mellow out. Splendid shiraz that will richly reward keeping.
