Easy on the palate with a smooth and easy palate, this Shiraz is guaranteed to impress. A rich body of plum and liquorice flavours pack a real punch, with enhanced maturation for intense oak undertones that add to the complexity.
Shiraz fruit was selected from low yielding, mature vineyards in the Barossa. Fruit was crushed and de-stemmed before fermentation on skins took place in a variety of different fermenters. Fermentation developed intense colour and extracted soft tannins from the skins. The wine was matured in seasoned and new French and American oak barrels for twenty two months and individual vineyard parcels were kept separate throughout the winemaking process and blended just prior to bottling.
93 Points - Ray Jordan The West Australian
“One of the famous names of the Barossa. It is a wine that has marvelous ageing potential. This one shows deep, rich, supple fruit with a thread of ripe tannins. It’s typically opulent and dense with so much packed into the chocolatey and slightly toasty palate.”
92 Points - James Suckling
“Blackberry compote, a touch of mint essence, five spices and chocolate-covered dark cherries. Full body, loads of juicy tannins, a fine line of fresh acidity and a chewy finish.”
91 Points - James Halliday WIne Companion
"If the 1859 can be accused of under-making, this is perhaps the opposite. Cloaked in oak, presiding over dense black fruit, with oak flavours carrying over on to the palate, leaving drying tannins. Some heat to finish too."
91 Points - Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front
"Saltram certainly isn’t averse to putting out a 15% whopper under its Mamre Brook label. It more or less takes its alcohol warmth in its stride though the fruit itself has a baked quality to it. It’s certainly not a fresh-fruited style. Tar, baked plums, dry earth and aromatic herb flavours fill out the palate. Oak doesn’t play a major role until the finish, where both cream and resin characters are active through the aftertaste. It feels as though it’s been knocked into shape rather than having found its own level; it has a sturdiness, a boldness, a close-enough sense of balance. Those looking for a bold red won’t be disappointed, except perhaps with the price. All that said, if you pull out a bottle of this in 8-10 years it’s to be still going strong."
