The palate is medium-weight, relative to the likes of the warm climate Bin 28 shiraz. The blue fruits noted on the nose are quite apparent on the flavour profile. However, the wine is orientated towards the savoury end of the spectrum. Cured meats, pepper, olives and paprika flavours vying for attention. On further inspection, almond kernels and cardamom add to the allure. The tannins are silken, finely woven around the fruit. The acid line is as neat as a pin. Everything is in the right place, a lovely wine now with decades of potential for those who can wait.
Coonawarra had a dry start to the growing season. However, February was wetter than average thanks to an inch of rain falling on the 5th and 6th. Spring was notably warm, November especially, up +3°C on the long-term average. Coonawarra experienced 7 days of minimum temperatures 35°C for a four-day period. The 24th of January recorded the hottest day for the summer at 42.3°C. Overall, the summer and autumn conditions were cooler than average, allowing shiraz grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The extra hang time produced lovely varietal characters. A brilliant vintage.

"I was immediately transported back to the great 128 vintages of ’86, 90 and 91. This is the best I have tasted since those stellar examples of this wonderful Coonawarra shiraz. A thoroughly beautiful example of this great Aussie shiraz. Gets 12 months in French oak of which 21% was new. Has a creamy rich dark fruit character, with lifted savoury and cracked peppery notes. The palate is very long with a limestone-like tannin influence. Has that distinctive fine and focused Coonawarra acidity which promotes a long finish. Brimming with smooth deeply intense fruit concentration."

"Shiraz from a strong Coonawarra vintage matured in French oak hogsheads (21% new and 22% one-year-old) for 12 months. A strong showing from Bin 128 with this release with plush dark and blue berry fruits with hints of panforte, fine spice, graphite, black pepper, pencil case, roasting meats and earth. There is something comforting and familiar within the wine's aromas and flavours. Medium bodied, long and fine with excellent balance, energy and structure finishing elegant and pure."

"Very deep, dark, brooding red/black/purple colours; amazing blackberry and iodine, graphite and violets on the nose, powerful and leaping from the glass. Very deep flavour, fills the mouth and has breadth as well as depth. A riot of fragrances here. Full bodied, supple and fleshy in the tannin department, with a lovely supple finish. Soft acidity. A stunningly good Bin 128."

"French oak, single region, Coonawarra, shiraz in a Bordeaux bottle. 12 months in oak, 21% new. It’s the line of iodine that sets this wine up for something more. It’s raspberried and a little meaty at heart, let’s call it infused with woodsmoke too, but that iodine character is where it pushes into more elevated territory. Lovely wine, this one, no doubt. The strength of the vintage shows. It’s more characterful than your average Penfolds bear, too."
