Medium ruby with purple hues. Deeply perfumed aromas of freshly cut red berries, with hints of rhubarb, cherry and liquorice, garrigue herbs, pinched lavender and more subtle notes of mace and white pepper. The palate is rich, spicy and focused, with vibrant raspberry and mulberry fruit, fresh pithy acidity and a long, elegant finish of fine, silky tannins.
92% grenache and 8% mataro grown in the Barossa Valley. Average winter rainfall was followed by minor frost events late in September and spring rains in early October. Budburst was even with good fruitfulness although heat bursts in late November affected fruit set. Strong winds in early December caused some damage to the canopies but the fruit remained disease free. January was mild and dry with a short heat wave late in the month at veraison, followed by rainfall in early February. The lead up to vintage and conditions during ripening remained cool, cloudy but dry. The fruit showing balanced acidity, excellent colour and great flavour development.

"This year's Johann's Garden is 92/8% grenache/mataro grown in the Barossa Valley, vinified separately and aged in seasoned French hogsheads for 10 months. Magenta-splashed crimson in the glass with super-pure fruit tones on display: red and dark plum, blueberry and boysenberry with underlying hints of exotic spice, gingerbread, purple floral tones, teacake, rhubarb, cherry clafoutis and mountain herbs. Succulent yet tending savoury on the finish with a real sense of purity and grace; superfine powdery tannin lending gentle support and a bright, mineral line."

"I tasted this fairly briefly at the winery but it impressed mightily. It’s mostly grenache with a spot of mataro. Cracking wine. So perfumed, so well shaped and so lengthy, for sure, but what really gets me excited is the profile of the fruit. It’s seriously lovely. Hay, earth, sweet raspberry, flashes of blueberry and violet with inputs from spice, almost pepper. Velvety aspect to the texture, particularly to the tannin. Wonderful stuff."

"Ripe red berries, rosehip and redcurrant, some liquorice and dried herb, vanilla and toasted nuts. It’s juicy, ripe plum and red fruits, fine silty tannin, nutty and a little savoury, but also offering a charming mouth-perfume of flowers, mint and scrub herbs. Finish is long and fine. Texture and perfume. It’s an excellent wine."

"Deep-ish purple-red colour, bright; aromas are restrained and very fresh, youthful and primal, perhaps unwooded—at least in part. The wine is sumptuously rich in flavour and fruit sweetness, persuasive tannins flooding in as well to provide a pleasant structural backbone. It's very young as yet but already delicious, and looks to have massive potential."

"Fresh red plum, redcurrant aromas with roasted walnut, hint vanilla notes. Generous and silky textured wine with ripe strawberry, red plum, redcurrant fruits, sinuous fine tannins, lovely mid-palate viscosity, underlying savoury notes and fresh quartz-like acidity. Finishes chalky and round with aniseed notes. Delicious drinking."
