St Hallett Blackwell Shiraz 2018
A full bodied wine with excellent framework and a multitude of layers. Instantly apparent are blackberry and black cherry fruit with hints of dark chocolate and vanilla characters laying over top. A very decadent and opulent wine with a balanced palate, excellent structure and refined texture.
Basedow Of Barossa Black Label Shiraz 2020
Dark red and purple hues. Balanced aromas of blackberry, cedar and pepper on the nose. The palate is decadent and rich flavours of plum, dark chocolate and black cherry combine with silky tannins to create a smooth finish.
Alexander King Cameron Heritage Reserve Limestone Coast Shiraz 2020
Black core with red brick hue. Beautifully fragrant nose with alluring blackberry, blueberry notes with oak and Chinese five spice adding the complexity. The palate is long and luscious displaying fleshy fruit flavours highlighting the high-quality fruit used for this wine. Blackberry characters, along with some blueberries, licorice, black pepper, and dusty leather interwoven across the palate with fine tannins lingering on the slightly spritzy finish. Will drink well now although will age well and develop more complexity.
Kopparossa Coonawarra Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
A richly flavoured red showing intense berry flavours with a hint of chocolate and mint on the after palate. The soft oak tannins and mouth filling flavours combine to produce a complex wine with great length. Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Bottle ages extremely well. It’s ability to age and still retain varietal fruit characters as well as develop attractive new aromas and flavours is legendary. This wine demonstrates that capability perfectly.
Olssen Of Watervale The Olssen Six Clare Valley Red 2017
Black with currant red flashes. Fragrant nose displaying sweet red berries with plum and mulberry highlights. Spicy and fruit driven with freshly cut plums along with dark cherry flavours. Soft, savoury tannins and good acid add structure and length to this voluptuous wine. Well-integrated oak provides the perfect backbone with tannins and acid all melting into one another.
Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Deep ruby crimson colour. A massive intense and enticing nose, the initial hit of exotic fruit once allowed to breathe will mellow. Black berry and dark cherry are the dominant character whilst varietal character of cassis is also very evident. The French oak influence is still evident despite its age and highlights the quality of the new large format oak used. Concentrated, tremendous texture and depth are hallmarks of this wine. The great richness which comes from black fruits flavours is immense, brooding and dense. The age of the wine is evident through notes of earth and leather saddle although the fruit is just so potent that they are just a side show. This style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.
Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
A massive all-encompassing nose but once allowed to breathe you will find this mellows. Dark plum and cranberry notes with leather saddle and earth which indicates the age whilst pepper, dark chocolate, and black currants all play a role here. The oak influence is obvious despite its age and highlights the quality of the new oak used. The palate is concentrated and straight up its no shrinking violet, offering up tremendous texture and richness with notes of dark plum, cranberry, black olive, saddle leather, alcohol and scorched earth. Brooding and densely packed, this style of wine requires decanting and time to breathe to soften prior to consuming although will be cellared prior to release the wine has the fruit, alcohol and tannin structure to ensure cellaring for many more years where it will continue to evolve.
McGuigan Personal Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2010
Garnet red. Aroma Upfront dark berry fruits with white pepper and subtle oak aromas. A dense and richly flavoured wine with a well rounded tannin structure and great length. Upfront forest berry flavours lead to a soft savoury finish.
Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019
Dark deep red with crimson edge. Exceptionally concentrated and youthful currently, distinct nose of roasted herb, truffle and jammy black fruits, raspberries, blueberries and cassis. The body is round and voluminous with mouth fulls of pure black fruit interwoven with some earth and roasted herb character adding a perfect side note whilst the finish is powerful and quite long and youthful it should only improve over the next 2 years and drink well for many years to come.
St Hallett Blackwell Shiraz 2018
The Blackwell Shiraz is consistently sourced from vineyards planted in the parishes of Ebenezer, Greenock and Moppa Hills, with each parcel brought to the winery as individual parcels. The pump over regime and temperature of the ferment varies across the blocks (and can also change depending on vintage conditions). Time on skins is typically in the range of 8- 12 days and ferment temperatures range from 20 - 30°C. After pressing the parcels go directly to barrel where it matures for 12 to 18 months.
Alexander King Cameron Heritage Reserve Limestone Coast Shiraz 2020
The fruit was selected from a single vineyard with a northeast facing slope and picked at optimum ripeness and transported to the winery and immediately crushed. Following on from this we fermented the juice on skins for 12 days to maximise colour and flavour extraction. The skins were then pressed gently and the pressings pumped back with the free-run juice. The wine was then fermented over a week then allowed to settle and was then racked off lees. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel and then was aged in the same barrels for 14 months. The wine was blended and prepared for bottling with minimal filtration.
Olssen Of Watervale The Olssen Six Clare Valley Red 2017
Carefully selected parcels of fruit were selected from the Watervale region in the Clare Valley. We picked in the evening and decided to macerate over night and crush the fruit early the next morning. The wine was fermented in older French barrels, and left to age in oak before we selected only the best barrels of the vintage for inclusion in the final six blend then the wine was blended and bottled with minimal fining or filtration.
Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special once off trial. Our commitment to making French influenced Iconic Australian wine lead us to the Coonawarra region and we felt our style would best benefit from fruit from this region. We hand-picked the fruit and it was transported to the winery where it was gently de-stemmed into concrete open top fermenters. It was then carefully nurtured for 7 days on skins with pump overs occurring twice daily, varying in duration and intensity. When primary fermentation was almost complete, the wine was drained from the skins and the must is gently basket pressed for 8 hours. It is then run directly into new French Puncheon barrels (500 litres) where it spent the next 60 months of its life and we believe is a world first for barrel aging such a wine. The wine was then blended, and only the best barrels selected to be bottled without the use of filtration or fining. Aged in bottle before just 500 six packs were released.
A wonderful example of traditional French style Cabernet Sauvignon with our individual Australian twist which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 1-2 hours prior to consuming.
Monolith Vintners Monolithic Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016
The 2016 vintage will go down as one of the finest vintages in the history of the Barossa. The vintage indicated early the supreme quality that would be produced by the dry grown, old vines that yielded the fruit we isolated for this special trail blend which was only the second in our history. Good winter rains were key as was the spring rains followed by a cooler than average summer which made for the near perfect conditions to create icon Barossa Shiraz. The wine was transferred into new oak to complete primary fermentation is completed and left in the same new French and American barrels where it spent the next 36 months with submerged bung with only one topping and sulphur addition. The wine was then blended, and the barrels were bottled without the use of filtration or fining.
A wonderful example of big and bold Barossa Shiraz which will stand the test of time, ensure it is allowed to breathe for at least 2 hours prior to consuming.
McGuigan Personal Reserve Hunter Valley Shiraz 2010
The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Bainton Vineyard in the subregion of Broke. This is a dry grown (unirrigated) Vineyard which accesses water supply from a subterranean water table. The resultant fruit provides highly concentrated flavours. Cool conditions throughout most of the growing season were coupled with dry hot conditions at the tail end of the season. At harvest due to low crop loads the grapes had excellent varietal and regional characteristics as well as a very dense colour hue. This wine is atraditional style Shiraz with minimal oak influence and has an enormous aging potential.
Viking Grand Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019
The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the Western Barossa Valley from the iron stone rich soils. The grapes are picked and delivered to the winery and gently worked through the de-stemmer before being transferred to an open fermenter. The juice is pumped over daily to extract as much concentrated fruit as possible for a week period before draining and being basket pressed. The skins are then gently pressed for approximately 24 hours. After the wine has completed its malolactic ferment, it is matured in new and seasoned American oak barrels prior to bottling with minimal fining and filtration.

94 Point Rated - Tyson Stelzer Wine Companion
"From 25–40yo vines in the northern Barossa. Matured 18 months in 20–30% new American oak barrels. Blackwell assumes a unique place in the St Hallett hierarchy, embodying the density and impact of the northern Barossa in waves of blackberry and satsuma plum fruit and licorice. Fantastic hue of full, vibrant purple. Dark chocolate oak lurks in the background. Quintessential modern Barossa shiraz in all its glory."
93 Point Rated - Stuart Knox The Real Review
"Black to purple hue, coating the glass. The nose is a melange of baked plums, cinnamon and paprika. Monster concentration, a sense of viscosity across the palate from this. Purple fruits abound with licorice, mocha and sweet spice layers. With all that concentration there are more than equally concentrated tannins to corral the enthusiasm. It drives long and deeply into the finish with just a hint of heat lingering."
93 Point Rated - Gary Walsh The Wine Front
"Strangely, the last vintage of Blackwell reviewed here was the 2015. I’m blaming Campbell. Vegemite and toasty spiced oak over ripe blackberry, liquorice and a minty floral perfume. Rich, full-bodied, ripe sweet dark fruit backed with roast coffee oak, almost sticky grainy tannin, plush, slightly salty, with a firm dry finish of fair length and some ripe raspberry bobbing up in the aftertaste. Rock solid."
