Tasting Notes:

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

Black/purple with a vibrant purple edge. Perfectly balance nose focused around a core of plum and blackberry, hints of violets and spice. Mouth filling with rich black fruit and great balance of flavour. Subtle violet, earth and black pepper notes surround the Plum and blackberry backbone. The oak integration is seamless and the tannins are subtle and ripe creating a finish that doesn’t quit.

Luchador El Diamante Clare Valley Riesling 2015

Displaying excellent fruit definition, this is a classic example of Clare Riesling at its best. It displays the typical lime, steely character of the region, with great depth and intensity of flavour. A vibrant crowd pleaser that is approachable when not in the ring! This delicate wine shows lifted floral aromas along with a touch of lime, it reflects El Diamante’s softer side and love of spooning.

Normans Old Vine McLaren Vale Shiraz 2016

Bright-appealing colour with purple/red hints. Well-balanced elegant nose with soft freshly cut plum, blackberry and blueberry notes showing its youthfulness at this stage. This is complimented with star anise spice giving depth to the highly aromatic bouquet. Full and vibrant with an initial surge of juicy fruit flavours of blackberry, plum and mulberry. The oak and tannins are smooth and subtle with the under lying taste whilst some spice and natural fruit acid give length and definition. An outstanding match with all full flavoured red meat dishes. I find it goes well with the over powering delicious flavour of barbequed spare ribs!

Boreham Wood Marlborough Riesling 2016

With floral aromas of lemon and lime, citrus blossom and perfumed hints of musk, pineapple and apricot the aromatics of this wine are instantly inviting. Flavours of honey, apricot, papaya and orange are backed by lovely mineral overtones, a sweet crisp acidity and a fresh lasting finish.

Pioneer Road Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2015

Selected Shiraz from premium vineyards throughout Langhorne Creek was vinified using a combination of fermentation styles and American oak, to highlight the regional characteristics. The wine has lifted aromas of spice, dark cherry and plums, with a rich, full-flavoured palate of forest fruits and vanilla, finishing with soft tannins and excellent length. It tastes great now and will reward patient cellaring.

The Colonial Estate Exodus Barossa Valley Chardonnay 2016

Pale Yellow and Green in colour. Powerful and complex yet with amazing purity. The nose initially has upfront fruit aromas of melon, nectarine and fig complimented by secondary aromatics of nutty oak. Lovely citrus flavours with an array of fruits including, grapefruit, nectarine and melon developing into a secondary layer of flavours of fig, honey, cedary oak and lees. Tight and focused on the finish with great depth of flavour and a lovely touch of natural fruit acidity. Enjoy with Roast chicken or roast pork with a buttery applesauce.

Normans Holbrooks Road Shiraz 2016

Maroon/Black with purple flashes. Upfront there is lifted dark berry and plum with a touch of spice, which compliments the subtle oak undertones. A rich, vibrant style of Shiraz with dark fruit richness and a smooth tannin structure. Delivering length and a subtle complexity, this wine highlights the quality fruit we source our wine from.

Crosswords Adelaide Hills Pinot Grigio 2016

Pearly white with medium green straw in colour. Subtle notes of nashi pear, pink grapefruit and musk, along with a little stone fruit and lemon sorbet. Display nashi pear and grapefruit flavours initially as well as some mineral and stone notes adding depth. A beautifully textured wine with the freshly cut fruit flavours working seamlessly with the natural fruit acidity, which ensures the wine, finishes soft and long.

Tanunda Hill Reserve Barossa Valley Cabernet Merlot 2014

Rich dark red with violet notes. Rich cassis, dark chocolate and red berry notes on the nose. Soft silky blackberry core with dark plum notes from the Merlot. well integrated oak give a soft lingering finish.

Technical:

The Colonial Estate Explorateur Barossa Valley Shiraz 2016

The vineyards that make up Explorateur are based in the northwestern Barossa Valley. This is a belt of land/terroir that runs from just to the northwest of Tanunda – Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Ebenezer, and through to Stockwell, just north of Nuriootpa. Cropping levels are kept low to ensure fruit flavour is highly concentrated. The same equipment that is accorded to our more expensive wines is made available to Explorateur. Fermentation is French in approach for up to two thirds of the wine made; the rest is vinified in a more Australian way, as is the oak treatment.

Luchador El Diamante Clare Valley Riesling 2015

Select parcels of fruit were sourced from the iconic Riesling producing region of the Clare Valley for this wine. The fruit was machine picked during the cool early hours of the morning. The fruit was then rapidly transported to the winery and immediately crushed, chilled and pressed. It is then allowed to settle before being racked off of juice lees, warmed and inoculated with selected dried wine yeasts. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks of various sizes. The finished parcels are carefully assessed, with only the finest chosen for the final blend prior to bottling.

A wine that will body slam your tongue!

Normans Old Vine McLaren Vale Shiraz 2016

Sourced from multiple sites in McLaren Vale from vines aged from 35 - 80 years of age. The wine was fermented in small stainless steel fermenters to retain concentrated fruit flavours. To complete the fermentation process and maturation the wine went into mostly old oak barrels with a small percentage of new oak for a period of 12 months. This enabled the use of the finely toasted oak barrels to slowly infiltrate the highly concentrated fruit flavour creating a well-balanced yet complex tannin structure.

Boreham Wood Marlborough Riesling 2016

The Awatere Valley is known for its relatively harsh climate with strong winds and morning frosts in spring working to harden the vines for the high temperatures of summer followed by the cool nights in autumn. As a result the vines struggle and we are able to harvest small, well matured grapes of typical Awatere finesse and flavour. The 2016 Riesling is a pure, sustainable, single vineyard Awatere Valley wine.

Helped by the warm 2016 season, the vines were in perfect condition at harvest time and the fruit were beautifully ripe and full of flavour. Minimal leaf plucking meant the grapes were exposed to the right amount of sunlight and as a result they ripened slowly which allowed the flavours to build up over time. Once in the press the bunches were squeezed a little bit and then left for 2 hours. This allowed a small amount of extracted juice to be in contact with the skins and pick up some of the flavour. The juice was then fermented very slowly until there was a perfect balance between the natural acidity and the residual sugar.

Pioneer Road Langhorne Creek Shiraz 2015

Like many of Australia’s renowned wine regions, Langhorne Creek was founded by people with two important Characteristics: “The vision to see what could be and the passion to make it happen”. Pioneer Road is testimony to those who made the journey

The Colonial Estate Exodus Barossa Valley Chardonnay 2016

The 2016 vintage Chardonnay has come up extremely well and perhaps this vintage will go down as one of the Barossa’s finest. Grapes were harvested in individual batches to select only the finest quality fruit and minimize losses due to the small tonnes grown. The picking occurred in early March from a single vineyard located in the Barossa. The wine was crushed and fermented with 20% of the blend receiving oak fermentation with frequent lees stirring. The two parcels were blended together and received oak maturation in second and third use French oak barrels then select barrels were blended together and bottled to ensure only the finest wine made the final blend.

Normans Holbrooks Road Shiraz 2016

Hand selected parcels of fruit were picked in the late evening crushed and fermented in stainless steel. A small parcel was put aside to ferment in oak barrels and was also allowed to age in older oak, before being blended back to create the finished wine.

Crosswords Adelaide Hills Pinot Grigio 2016

Pinot Grigio is a grey/pink grape, which we harvested and crushed immediately with no sulphur addition. This was to prevent any colour from the skin penetrating the juice prior to fermentation. Only the free run juice was used in the making of this wine. The clear juice was racked after a week and inoculated with a yeast culture. Cold fermentation occurred over a 2 weeks period and the wine was filtered and bottled to retain its fresh fruit and flavours and natural fruit acidity.

Tanunda Hill Reserve Barossa Valley Cabernet Merlot 2014

The 2014 season was generally warm which allowed the grapes to ripen and develop strong flavours. A soft and smooth Barossa Cabernet (75%) and Merlot (25%) blended classically with some extended skin contact to soften the palate. This wine matured in older American oak barrels for 15 months to allow the fruit aromas to develop and the tannins to naturally soften.

Boreham Wood Marlborough Riesling 2016

94 Points & 5 Stars Wine Orbit

A fabulous medium-style riesling. The elegantly expressed bouquet shows pristine aromas of white nectarine, lemon sorbet, mandarin and floral. The palate is concentrated, yet light and delicate, with attractive sweetness and bright acidity. Wonderfully balanced and immensely appealing, this is gorgeous drinking now and should also develop magnificently.

4 Star Raymond Chan

Bright, very pale straw-yellow colour with green hues, very light on the edge. The nose is delicate with pure and refined, tightly-held aromas of white florals harmoniously entwined with lime fruit and mouthwatering wet-stone elements, unfolding nuances of honeysuckle and sherbet. Medium in sweetness and light bodied, gentle and soft flavours of limes, white florals and honeysuckle show with subtle, youthful, herbal suggestions, forming a tight, soft core. The mouthfeel is very soft and refined in texture and flows with gentle energy. The acidity is soft and lacy, and the wine flows smoothly to a lingering finish of limes, florals and fresh herbs. This is a reserved and refined medium-sweet Riesling in the Mosel Kabinett style.
