Olssens of Watervale The Olssen Six 2013
The fruit was picked over a 3-week period starting at the beginning of March, once picked the fruit was transported to the winery and de-stemmed. Primary fermentation was carried out in stainless steel fermenters the grapes were pressed using pneumatic bag press with all pressings returned to add more weight and texture to the wine. The wine was then transferred to French and American oak for secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured for 18 months prior to the selection of the barrels deemed best of vintage for inclusion in the final Six. This Ultra Premium dry red blend is made up of 85% Clare Merlot & 15% Clare Shiraz

Fruit was harvested at night and early in the morning then taken directly to the winery to be de-stemmed. The must was then transferred to a static fermenter where warm controlled fermentation was carried out. Post fermentation the wine was transferred into barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wines were racked after MLF and returned to oak for 12 months maturation before final blending and barrel selection for the second six.

The fruit was picked in early-March, destemmed and crushed before fermentation in Potter fermenters. The juice was racked and returned once a day for 2 weeks and at sugar dryness the skins were pressed and the wine was then transferred to tank and Malolactic fermentation was induced, once the malo was complete the wine was returned to oak were it aged for 18 months.
Pikes The Red Mullet Clare Valley Shiraz Blend 2013
Predominantly made from Shiraz with other bits and pieces, the Red Mullet is a little more serious than the name suggests. While providing affordable every day drinking, this wine delivers plenty on the quality front.
Grape Variety: Shiraz 76%, Tempranillo 18%, Cabernet 4%, Merlot 2%
Clare Hills Clare Valley Shiraz 2013 By Neil Pike
The 2013 vintage commenced quite early for most winemakers in the Clare Valley – it was the 8th February for us. A cool winter with average rainfall was followed by a warm, dry spring and summer that delivered sound fruit to the winery for vinification. The resultant wines are really very good – possibly better than anticipated given the warm growing season. Lower alcohols, pure concentrated flavours and fine tannins are the hallmarks of this vintage. The grapes for this wine were machine harvested, transported to the winery, de-stemmed into open fermenters and cold soaked for three days before fermentation began. The wine was pumped over twice daily during ferment for approx 7 days and this was followed by draining, pressing and then maturation in French oak casks for 14 months before racking and blending. The wine was stabilised and lightly filtered prior to bottling.
Pikes Vintners is an iconic family owned and operated winery set amongst the hills and valleys of South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley.
